Our History, our DNA:
St. Paul’s Lodge No. 374 is one of Montreal’s oldest fraternal institutions, with a history that stretches back more than two and a half centuries. Founded during the early years of British rule in Canada, the Lodge has grown alongside the city itself, quietly contributing to Montreal’s civic and cultural life since the eighteenth century.
Beginnings in a Growing City:
The origins of St. Paul’s Lodge date to 1770, a period when Montreal was a small but expanding town. Freemasonry, newly established in the region, offered a space where individuals from different backgrounds could meet as equals, guided by shared values of integrity, mutual respect, and service to others. St. Paul’s Lodge emerged as part of this early movement, bringing together men involved in commerce, public service, and the professions.
Surviving Loss and Change:
In 1833, a major fire in Montreal destroyed the building where the Lodge met, along with many of its early records. Although this loss created gaps in the written history of St. Paul’s Lodge, its existence and activity during this early period are confirmed through references found in the records of other local lodges. These surviving accounts helped preserve the Lodge’s story when its own documents were no longer available.
Despite this setback, St. Paul’s Lodge continued its work without interruption, adapting to a rapidly changing city while maintaining its traditions and sense of purpose.
An Enduring Connection to English Freemasonry:
Since its institution in 1770, St. Paul’s Lodge stayed connected to its English origin, between the Moderns and the Antients. Although its number changed many times, its official designation became St. Paul’s Lodge No. 374. When a new provincial Grand Lodge was established in Quebec in 1869, St. Paul’s Lodge and its sister Lodge St George’s 440 E.R. chose to remain under English jurisdiction. This decision preserved their historical identity and traditions and remain a distinctive feature of these Lodges today.
People and Community:
Over the generations, St. Paul’s Lodge has included members who played important roles in the business, political, and social development of Montreal. However, the Lodge’s enduring strength lies not in individual prominence, but in the collective commitment of its members to ethical conduct, personal growth, and community involvement.
The Lodge has always been a place of fellowship—where friendships are formed, values are shared, and members support one another both within and beyond its walls.
A Living Legacy:
Today, St. Paul’s Lodge No. 374 continues to meet regularly and welcome new members. While firmly rooted in tradition, it
remains a living and evolving organization, shaped by the people who carry its values forward.
The history of St. Paul’s Lodge is not only a record of the past, but an ongoing story—one that reflects continuity, resilience, and a lasting commitment to principles that remain as relevant today as they were more than two centuries ago
